The original Pashtun proverb perfectly captures the creeping, three-stage nature of historical colonization: innocent scouting, systematic surveying, and eventual takeover.
“First comes one Englishman, as a traveler or for a shikar;
then come two and make a map;
then comes an army and takes the country.
Therefore it is better to kill the first Englishman”
~ Pashtun Proverb referring to the British Colonization

All houses are dark until the mother wakes up. ~ Khalil Gibran.
From Essay "The Mother" (found in The Broken Wings):
"The mother is everything—she is our consolation in sorrow, our hope in misery, and our strength in weakness. She is the source of love, mercy, sympathy and forgiveness... The sun is the mother of the earth and gives its nourishment of heat; it never leaves the universe at night until it has put the earth to sleep... and the mother, the prototype of all existence, is the eternal spirit, full of beauty and love."
“Do not be absent for too long,
then come and ask about how I am,
details die with time and stories change.”
- Mahmoud Darwish
لا تُطِل الغياب،
ثم تأتي لتسأل عن حالي..
فالتفاصيل تموت مع الوقت، والحكايات تتغير.
“Be curious.
Read widely.
Try new things.
What people call intelligence just boils down to curiosity.”

During a conversation with the Queen of England, then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher discussed adding some younger, fresher faces to her cabinet who would be more loyal to her new budget agenda. The Queen, offering her advice, mentioned that one might not want to stir things up in government or make enemies. Thatcher responded, “Unless one is comfortable having enemies.” Then she quoted the “No Enemy” poem written by Charles Mackay.
I came across a book that said:
"Working out will make you feel weak, when it's actually making you stronger.
Learning new things will make you feel dumb, when it's actually making you smarter.
Investing in yourself will make you feel broke, when it's actually making you rich.
Facing your fears will make you feel terrified, when it's actually making you braver."
Never hold yourself back. Strive to be better tomorrow than you were today.
Thank yourself later.
